Danforth, IL - Richard L. Skelly, age 88 of Kankakee passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Faith Place in Danforth, IL. He was born on August 15, 1936 in Bradley, the son of Lawrence A. and Rose (Lazzara) Skelly. Richard married Barbara Jean Habing on April 4, 1964 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kankakee. She preceded him in death on March 31, 2024.
Richard worked for Armour Pharmaceuticals for over forty years. He loved camping with Prairie State Sams. Richard loved going to garage sales, boating, motorcycles and tinkering.
Richard was a veteran of the United States Army.
He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kankakee.
Surviving are five children, Ann Berns of Kankakee, David Skelly of Kankakee, Ellen (Eric) Schmidt of Manteno, Matthew (Megan) Skelly of Ottawa, Steven (Kim) Skelly of Manteno; one brother, Larry (Marilyn) Skelly of Joliet; seven grandchildren, Alex (Aisha) Berns, Megan (Ronnie) Wilcox, Emilia Skelly, Hannah Skelly, Lucas Schmidt, Heidi Schmidt, and Owen Skelly; five great grandchildren, Magnolia Berns, Charlotte Berns, Articai Berns, Quinn Wilcox, Blake Wilcox; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents; three brothers-in-law, Ronald Habing, Charles Habing, and Patrick Habing; four sisters-in-law, Cheryl Skelly, Joan Skelly, Sharon Habing, and Maureen Habing.
Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home, Kankakee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kankakee. Reverend John Peeters will celebrate the Mass. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass. Inurnment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, St. Patrick Catholic Church, or the American Red Cross.
