Kankakee, IL - Mrs. Phala B. Nuckolls, 97 of Kankakee, IL, departed this life to be with the LORD on Monday, July 7, 2025, with family and friends by her side. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Jones Funeral Home. Additional visitations will be on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Morning Star Baptist Church from 10 am until the 11 am funeral service. Pastor Montele A. Crawford will officiate with interment at Kankakee Memorial Garden.
She was born January 20, 1928, in Vicksburg, MS, to the late Charlie and Anna Bruce. Mrs. Nuckolls received Christ at an early age in Vicksburg, MS. She was united in Holy Matrimony to George Nuckolls in 1945 and they remained together until his death in November 2000.
She was employed at Amberg File for 29 years and later worked at Shapiro for 12 years, where she retired. After her retirement, she decided to join the Kankakee/Livingston Counties' Foster Grandparent Program. She served as a Volunteer at Proegler School Headstart Program from November 2007 through May 2018.
Mrs. Nuckolls was a long-time and faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church for many years. She served on the Mission Ministry and taught Sunday School. Some of her activities included gardening, socializing with other Seniors, and she was also a member of the Lamplighters Club of the YWCA. She was a pillar in the community.
Mrs. Nuckolls was also preceded in death by her siblings - Pauline Bruce, Mamie Hunter, Herman Burton, Willie Bruce, Minnie Baxter, Louise Shelby, Katherine Price, and a grandson, Marco Chandler.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Chandler (Ora); grandchildren - Ruby Ann Shelby, Johnny Short, Jr., Otis Chandler, Brien Miller (Tammie), Connita Hill (Henderson,); great-grandchildren, Andrea Michelle Wright and Andre` Michael Wright; three great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, special nieces Inez West and Mary Martin; a host of cousins and friends; special friends Iola Mobley, Sarah Robertson, Valerie Snow and Mary Tate-Johnson.
