Betty Jeanne (Scroggins) Benoit Obituary

Betty Jeanne (Scroggins) Benoit, 99, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025 at The Waters of Edina, MN, with her loving family by her side.

What a stellar life! Born in Kankakee, Illinois August 11, 1925, to Mary Clark Scroggins and Leo Scroggins, Betty would spend her growing years in Kankakee along with her younger siblings Dolores and Bill. Betty graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1943 and went to work for Roper Corporation. Several years later she would meet the love of her life Jerry Benoit after finishing his tour in Europe and the end of WWII. The two married on November 25th 1948. They then moved to Bourbonnias, Ill where they would begin a family. Betty and Jerry would go on to have six children and settle in Kankakee, IL before Jerry's work would take the family to Fremont, Nebraska, and eventually to Farmington, Minnesota. Due to the success of her husband's career, the two were able to travel throughout Europe and South America on many business trips. These outings were important to Betty and Jerry after growing up in the depression era.

Betty spent the majority of her life raising a close and loving family. She was a devout Catholic and was very involved with her church. She was the quintessential mother who adored her children. Like herself, it was important that all six were respectful and kind. She also loved to sew and cook, often preparing large Sunday after church meals. When all six were older, she returned to work at the elementary school in the front office. She loved the camaraderie and friendships she formed during those years. Up until the past year she would continue to enjoy an annual lunch out with a student she knew from her second-grade year at the school.

Betty loved sports. She was an avid fan of football and baseball. She would follow the coaches, the managers as well as current standings and scorecards. Most of her Saturday afternoons were spent washing, ironing, and folding clothes for eight, while watching college sports. Although the Vikings and the Twins were her favorites, she was happy to watch any game on TV.

Betty and Jerry enjoyed a wonderful life together before Jerry's passing in 2012. Given her sense of adventure, Betty accepted a gracious offer from daughter Joleen and wife Nancy to move to Palm Desert. These were four great years where she experienced good health, excellent care and a lot of love!

In 2018 Betty decided to head back to Minnesota with her growing family. At The Waters Edina she enjoyed making many new friends with residents and staff while being close to three of her daughters Janine, Carol, and Joleen. These were equally meaningful years, where the three would see to her needs as she lived out the rest of her life. Betty epitomized the word "class". She always looked her absolute best and most importantly she was joyful, kind and considerate to all who crossed her path.

Betty is predeceased by her husband Jerry, sister Dolores Goudreau, and brother Bill Scorggins. She is survived by her six children Barry Benoit, Bonnie (Larry) Harms, Joleen Benoit (Nancy Denman), Carol (Kelby) Brothen, Janine (Kevin) Wittig, and Vance (Cheryl) Benoit. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Julie (Michael) Buckman, Tim Harms, Hudson (Laura) Brothen, Alex Wittig (Jordan Holler), Tanner (Jenny) Brothen, Noelle Brothen, Max (Lauren) Wittig, Jack Benoit, Charlotte Benoit and Lillian Benoit.

Betty lived a full life filled with love and enduring relationships. She will be dearly missed by her family and all those who were touched by her kindness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Church of St. Michael, 22120 Denmark Ave., Farmington, MN with a visitation starting at 9:30 AM. Interment, Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at 12:15 PM, Mpls, MN.
